The Food Mood Connection

Happiness is in the gut, not the brain!

Have you ever had that "gut feeling" or "butterflies in the stomach" , or that dreadful "nervous/upset stomach" ? We think our emotions originate from our brains, but really it's mostly created in our bellies! The entire digestive system is closely attuned to a persons emotions and state of mind. In fact 90 % of serotonin production known as the "happiness hormone", despite not being a hormone is produced in our digestive tracts. There is a constant exchange of chemicals and electrical messages between the two systems. In fact many scientists often refer to them as one entity; the brain-gut axis. Therefore , what affects the stomach will directly affect the brain and vice versa. Knowing this it is particularly important to provide our systems with proper nutrition to support a merry disposition.

Here are some foods that will leave your gut brain beaming with joy!

Free range turkey

High quality dark chocolate (70% cacao or higher)

Dark leafy greens

Flaxseed/ flaxseed oil

Wild fish and seafood

Bananas

Cashews, almonds

Probiotics-- Putting live bacteria in your gut helps to keep the digestive lining clean and fight off the bad stuff from sticking . You can consume probiotics in pill form or in the most natural way of food. Organic yogurts, sauerkraut, kombucha tea, miso, tempeh, kim chi are all great sources for probiotics.
